Remember: Measure Twice, Order Once, when measuring for a garage door the sizing responsibility is yours.

There are a few key things to consider to help you avoid ordering the wrong sized garage door. Firstly, if you are replacing your existing up and over garage door, you must choose whether you are going to retain your existing wooden frame or whether you would prefer your new garage door to be supplied complete with a lower maintenance steel (we don't recommend GRP factory frames ) that will fix directly to your brickwork.

If you are going to retain your existing timber frame, measure the internal dimensions of the frame. Make sure the frame is sound, square and securely fixed to the brickwork, look out for signs of rotting at the bottom of the frame leg. Also ensure that the timber is the recommended minimum size of 75mm x 75mm (3" x 3"). Always measure the width and the height of the aperture from more than one point as the brickwork or timber frame may not be consistent.

If you would like your new garage door to come with the recommended factory frame, measure the brickwork to brickwork width of your opening. To determine the height of your garage opening, measure from the floor to the underside of the lintel. If you want your new door and frame to fit between the brickwork. Remember to gain width the door and new frame could fit behind the brickwork increasing drive through by 5 to 6 inches 100mm . Phone and ask if unsure. Or we can visit free of charge.

The ordering size of your new garage door does not allow for any fitting tolerances, such as uneven brickwork or floor finishes. You will need to allow for any tolerances when ordering your door by taking the measurement across the opening in at least 3 separate places, i.e. top, middle and bottom, you will need to work to the smallest width taken. Do the same again for the height by taking measurements a the left, centre and right. Please double check all your measurements.

Traditionally most Garage Door openings in the UK are built to imperial measurements (feet & inches) and most standard garage door sizes are therefore manufactured to imperial dimensions. If you are constructing a new garage we can supply made to measure doors or standard metric sizes for certain door styles. We are here to help you get the right door, so please feel free to call into our showroom at Bognor Regis or Polegate for more help and advise.

All garage door sizes shown are nominal, the size stated refers to the size of the opening through which the garage door travels i.e. internal frame size. The manufacturer will make a deduction to provide the necessary clearance and the true size for the door itself may be smaller. Because of this deduction, always measure your opening size and not the size of your existing door panel. Once you have established the dimensions of your garage door opening you must consider the internal dimensions of your garage to ensure that the track & mechanism will fit. The length of any ceiling mounted tracks will generally depend on the height of the door. The track for electric operators can extend up to 1500mm beyond the open door. The complete boom of a motor unit is usually 3.2 meters long, it can in some instances be cut down to smaller lengths.

How to Avoid These Common Mistakes People Make When Measuring for their New Garage Door.

Taking your time is important as it’s very easy to overlook some of the common obstructions that will stop your new garage door fitting perfectly.

Our advice is to get a clear idea of exactly where any tracks and electric operators will be fixed within your garage.

To help you we are happy to send you detailed information for your chosen door mechanism which will show important dimensions for you to check. This will guarantee the smooth installation of your new garage door. Please feel free to email us internal and external photographs of your garage.

Top Most Common Garage Door Obstructions:- "a garage door is a garage door, right ?" No ,they are not all the same, trust me.

  • Sloping Ceilings /Walls internally.
  • With opening outward doors, remember, drain pipes, steps and fences , a suitable clearance is needed.
  • Brick Piers internal, the ones you knock the car door on.
  • Gas or Electric Meters these are put wherever it was easy for the gas or electric man, not with consideration for your new door.
  • Boilers again, installed to suit the plumber .
  • Side or Rear Doorways Opening onto Door Tracks , like wise when stepping out through a side door into the garage, what height clearance do you need, a common fault is restricting access with the doors tracks.
  • Gas or Water Pipes along with BT and power cables.
  • Steel or Timber Beams further into the garage, when changing from a canopy to tracked or sectional door, these need to be considered.
  • Lights & Light Switches along with loft hatch access.
  • Windows
  • Sloping Driveway (For Outward Opening Doors Only) I.e. tracked or side hung doors, that swing outside the opening.
